I never knew there was a real bear behind the story of Winnie-the-Pooh, did you? Finding Winnie: The True Story of the World's Most Famous Bear was one of my favorite picture books of 2015. Author Lindsay Mattick is the great-granddaughter of Captain Harry Colebourn, a Canadian soldier and veterinarian who adopted a bear cub as a pet during World War I, and named it Winnie. This very real bear went on to inspire A.A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh. Finding Winnie is beautifully illustrated by Sophie Blackall. The poignant story, which includes photos of the original Winnie, transported me to a different era. Unforgettable.
